African American history is generally taught in a superficial and celebratory manner during Black History Month in our nation’s schools. A recent study conducted by the Southern Poverty Law Center found that the teaching of slavery in American K-12 classrooms is “dismal.” This should not be surprising since most K-12 teachers have not studied African American history and have not been trained in how to effectively teach this subject. The Crafting Freedom Institute (CFI) exists for one purpose: to address the dual needs for effective and easy-to-implement instructional materials and professional development workshops that empower teachers – regardless of their disciplines – to teach about the era of slavery. CFI needs your generous donations so we can continue meeting these critical needs. Please make a tax\u2013deductible donation to the Crafting Freedom Institute so CFI can continue to empower teachers to teach about slavery and the African American historical experience. (CFI’s Federal Tax I.D. number is: 30-030-1075).<\/p>\n
